Who We Are
Project Literacy is a proudly South African non-profit, public benefit organisation, registered as Project Literacy Education Centres NPC (Registration No. 1986/004771/08). We are governed by a diverse board whose non-executive directors volunteer their time and expertise free of charge. As a non-profit company, we have no shareholders; our focus is entirely on educational impact. We are fully accredited and recognised by key educational bodies:
- Skills Development Levy Number: L900712953
- Accredited by the ETDP SETA as a provider for several Skills Development Programmes and qualifications which are currently being adapted and moved to the QCTO (Number: ETDP0348
- Accredited by Umalusi as a training provider for the General Education and Training Certificate, which is an NQF Level 1 qualification for adults.
- Accredited by the QCTO as a training provider for Adult Education and Training and Early Childhood Education Practitioner Qualifications
- Registered with the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) as a training provider for Foundational Learning Competence and Adult Basic Education and Training levels 1, 2 and 3.

Flagship Initiatives
- Run Home to Read: Empowering parents and caregivers to nurture literacy in the home, and providing training and hope to unemployed community members who become Reading Champions.
- Establishing, staffing and managing a workplace-based Adult Education Centre at South Deep Mine: a successful partnership between Goldfields and Project Literacy.
- The Big Blue Book Bus: Access to library services for Primary School children in underserved areas of Gauteng: a successful partnership between Project Literacy and Chamberlain’s Hardware.
- Funda Sizwane: focus on reading with understanding in the home language for Foundation Phase learners in schools.
- Partnering with NPOs and CBOs: Collaborative educational programmes

Certificates of Competency
Learners who successfully complete our programmes and pass DBE, IEB or SACAI assessments receive credit-based certificates recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Our learning materials are developed in alignment with SAQA unit standards and qualifications.
Accredited Training Materials
Our Materials and Curriculum Development Department produces high-quality, outcomes-based learning materials. Each course is:
- Based on SAQA Unit Standards
- Developed through rigorous needs analysis
- Crafted by expert writers and editors
- Professionally published and quality-controlled
- We also offer customised course development for clients with specific needs, often delivered within tight timeframes without compromising quality.
