About Project Literacy

Who We Are

Our Evolving Vision & Mission

Vision

To effect broad-based black socio-economic development though high quality education and training programmes.

Mission

To deliver a wide range of education and training programmes to educationally disadvantaged adults, youth and children.

How We Work

Adapting to the needs of our beneficiaries and clients

We work in the most appropriate contexts for our clients. This can be in the workplace, the community, the home or through formal education institutions like early learning centres, primary schools, adult education or further/community education centres. Our beneficiaries have changed enormously over the last 30 years. Now Black youth comprise 65%, unemployed Black people 53% and Black people living in rural areas 53%.

Reading for understanding

One of the most urgent challenges in South Africa is to create a culture of reading: reading for understanding; reading for lifelong learning; reading for pleasure. We have always developed and used materials in all the languages relevant to the communities. We partner with other organisations to get greater access to books and other open educational resources.
